The Digital International Film Festival was born in 2003 due to the absence in Chile of an audiovisual forum in which filmmakers could exhibit their work in the digital format. Subsequently the contest extended its call to foreigners, thus becoming the only event of its kind in the country, indeed in Latin America, dedicated to promoting the digital format.

In its 7 years, the International Digital Film Festival has managed to encourage the Latin-American audiovisual community thanks to the specificity of its format.  During these years it has received more than 2,500 works, and has been graced with the presence of important actors, directors, producers and guests of national and international distinction.

Another strength of the contest is its varied and innovative programming. This is an event carried out by renowned programmers in Argentina, Spain, France, United States and Chile, who are at the vanguard of the most important independent works of the globe.

With the assistance of over 10 thousand people along with great media coverage, the festival has become one of the most important appointments in the film world.  For its 8th version, and with the idea to continue growing, the contest has prepared a reengineering of its corporate image and identity as an audiovisual event.

The event is organized by The Centro Cultural Quinta en Movimiento, and co-produced by the Universidad del Mar and Lastarria 90; and has the support from Fondo de foment audiovisual 2009, and the sponsorship of the Municipalidad de Viña del Mar and the Bicentenary commission of the Government of Chile.

Bluedot is pleased to announce that the licensing rights have been finalized and everything is set for distribution on the Italian peninsula.  It is inevitable that the Quantum Activist goes international since Dr. Goswami’s sources and references are themselves international and his message universal.

Italy has that Mediterranean passion some may call an addiction to beauty.  The Quantum Activist has aimed not only to present Dr. Goswami’s message clearly, but also to create a cinematic tapestry to do justice to the beauty of his work.  In fact, much of the artwork and churches in the film are from Italy. We are excited that our film will be seen by a people with such an aesthetic for visual beauty in a country with such a wealth of magnificent art.

The Italian soul prefers the physical, visceral effect of a Michelangelo creation to the contemplation of it.  Theirs is a visual more than a cerebral culture.  Transcendence through beauty.

Of course Italy also has a rich history of literary and intellectual contributions.  But even at the height of cerebral investigation there seems to be a playful spirit in the Italian.  They are a touchy-feely, sensual playful people who have somehow given us the tragedy of opera.  Heavy subjects are handled with a playful spirit as evidenced by the graceful curves of statues.

There is something of this playful spirit in the film for even as he discusses his most esoteric points, Dr. Goswami belies a playful even humorous soul. We look forward to the reception of the Quantum Activist in the beautiful land of Italy.

It seems inevitable for the Quantum Activist to go international since Dr. Goswami’s sources and references are themselves international and his message universal.

Australia should make a wonderful venue for the film because like Dr. Goswami’s message in the Quantum Activist, Australia has a frontier spirit. Its cinema conveys this spirit to me with a craving for vistas of distinctly Australian landscapes. Red and endless. Whereas the American West hits me as rugged and heroic, the Australian panorama is primeval – mythic. It opens one up rather than circumscribes. It seems to be a culture with an appetite for expanding boundaries and a land with a mythic presence.

I was hitch-hiking in Australia’s outback and was stuck somewhere north of Alice Springs in a desolate place far from anywhere. There were only flies and dirt in the 110 degree sun and a series of large, strange boulders. In honor of the boulders the place was named Devils Marbles. There seemed to be no other rocks in this desert giving the boulders a distinct presence.

The aborigines believe that the rocks are the fossilized eggs of the Rainbow serpent who laid them during the dream time while resting after having fashioned the earth. Geologist say that they are granite rocks of volcanic origin which have been eroded to their unusual shapes.

That night I was alone as I waited for a vehicle to come along. With the flies gone I seemed to be the only living thing. The silence and blackness of the desert; and these large rocks had an effect on me. It wasn’t so much that I felt I was traveling backwards in time; it was more like something ancient were racing towards me. As if dreaming I heard metallic whispers from the rocks; there was a cold tingling. By the time I got a ride the next day I had more faith in the aboriginal story than that of the geologists. They were rocks by day and eggs by night.

I am reminded of the anthropologist who asks the native if he really believes that all those rocks out there have living spirits. “Of course not”, answers the native. “Not all of them.”

We are enthusiastic to see how the film which aspires to a frontier spirit and has a mystic disposition does in the magical land of Australia.

Many joined the filmmakers Renee Slade and Ri Stewart, along with the pivotal Betsy Chasse, co-creator of  ”What the Bleep do we know?” for a lively conversation after the film about quantum physics, the nature of reality, and our responsibility to it.

Many moviegoers talked about how the film touched them to apply the power of quantum physics into their own lives.  We talked about dualism a bit, but most importantly… what can we do to create a beautiful reality within the co-creation that we are entangled with?   Thanks for coming!

This whole event has some real magic behind it. Grassroots, old school magic. First, our friends in Oakland set the whole thing up with the Mills College so it could be offered for free to their students. That means that it was also free to the public as well!

Then, we have to talk about how amazing this venue is. One of california’s most notable Spanish Colonial architects created an incredible space, and it was newly renovated in 2008. Full new acoustics, soundboards, media projection… it looked & sounded incredible! We projected through one of the nicest projectors I have ever experienced from a Hi-Def version. The low frequencies within the theater were amazing.

We would like to thank all of you that came out for this screening! We would also like to thank our super cool friends Jaia & Josh, and our new friend Terrylynn who greeted all the movie goers. A special YAY! goes to Mills College for this wonderful opportunity in community activism.

An amazing group of people showed up for this event, with amazing takes and study on the nondual nature of consciousness.

We assisted Dr. Goswami in his preconference workshop on October 21, hosted a screening of The Quantum Activist on the 22nd, and enjoyed Dr. Goswami’s plenary presentation to the conference on August 23rd. Another screening of the film will be held on August 25th as well.

We really enjoyed meeting everyone, and thank you all for an incredible event!

At no point in my life can I remember a time when there has not been at least a half dozen self help philosophies circulating their way through popular culture. From mail order courses teaching you to master the art of the meaningful stare to pick up women, to videos that offer you the car of your dreams through positive thinking, self help has been a palpable force in the market since the early 70s, but recently, thanks largely to the emergent field of quantum physics, some of these programs have finally begun to make sense.

The most high profile of this new breed of philosophical works was the cult hit What the Bleep Do We Know?! which burst on the scene in 2004, proving that esoteric discourse on the nature of reality can, somehow, do well at the box-office. Since then, various films have tried to capitalize on this idea including Nova’s Elegant Universe and the phenomenally successful book turned movie The Secret. This last, being the least scientific of the bunch, used the ideas of quantum mechanics with regard to the changeable nature of reality to argue that intention and positive thinking can get you anything that you want in life. It even went so far as to provide a wish-list that purchasers of the film could fill out listing all of the wonderful things they hope to have as a result of the process.

Personally, I have never been much for any school of thought resembling those 70s self help plans: there is something suspicious in the idea that, for $30, I can learn a secret that will get me a great car and the house of my dreams. For this reason I was hesitant to watch What the Bleep and The Secret on the chance that they might not amount to more than so much snake oil. While I will keep my views on the latter to myself at this time, I was pleasantly surprised by the former which seemed, rather than an elaborate process for self gratification, to be an earnest attempt at understanding the nature of the world around us. Consequently, I was excited when I discovered that the University of Oregon’s Amit Goswami, one of the theoretical physicists and philosophers featured in What the Bleep, had come out with a new film called The Quantum Activist.

The film, which seeks to apply scientific understanding to spiritual subject matter, tackles such weighty questions as “what is the nature of the soul?” and “why do bad things happen to good people?” with sophistication and intelligence. The editing style is a superb blend of archival and pop culture footage, interview and lecture reels from Goswami, and computer generated esoteric symbolism that is as entertaining as it is thought provoking. What’s more, it never once resorts to the questionable tactic of offering an unrealistically simplistic road to ultimate success but deals with spirituality in an analytical and socially responsible way. All of this in a local film from Bluedot Productions out of Yachats, Oregon.

While you will not see this film on TV or at your local video store for a while yet, it will be playing at this year’s Cottage Grove Regional Film Festival on Friday August 28th at Centro Del Sol and on Saturday August 29th at Cosmo Café. If you want the keys to all future success for just three easy payments, watch a late night infomercial and I am sure it will be happy to oblige, but if you are interested in a less sophomoric approach to mysticism, try The Quantum Activist: it won’t get you a new car, but it will help you to understand why you don’t have one.

Jennifer Monk, a Loveland yoga teacher has found that by doing screenings of conscious media, she’s not only sharing the ideas of todays luminaries, but by offering a split of the door to help her local homeless.

When we talked to Jennifer, she’s finding more and more satisfaction screening films for fundraising at her local theater, and is really starting to focus on it. It’s a great way to do seva (selfless service), thinking and acting locally.

We’re very excited about this screening, as her efforts in her community are the very essence of compassion and unity; virtues that Dr. Goswami finds inherent in the signatures of quantum mechanics.”You can change yourselves, and your society at the same time” says Amit. “I invite you to become quantum activists, with this resolution in mind.”

How would it look? How would it sound? How would it feel? This was the very first time we had the opportunity to screen The Quantum Activist on a screen of the magnitude of a performing arts center… a center that holds it’s own film festival!

Jan is such a blessing to BlueDot. It’s as if she believes in helping creatives in the core of her being. While ceaslessly running the Newport Performing Arts Center, she is also a lead for the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. 

Yes, Jan is good to us. She has helped this production company have access to stages, equipment and venues we would have never thought possible.

We met with Steve Travis, an amazing and creative guy who was to help us with the projection and sound. There were two options for the screen, a small projection screen (small at 20′ or so) and the large scrim they are using for the Opera simulcasts at over 35′ . We chose the scrim, even though it decreased our saturation of our film… as we wanted to see it “bigger than life”.

Once we found the right keys to get into the projection room, we squeezed by the monster 35mm projector, found the hookups for the laptop, and proceeded to plugin to the 10,000 lumen digital projector that is standing by to take the old behemoth’s place someday soon.

On my trusty laptop resided a 4:2:2 10 bit version of the film, in as Hi-Def as we could muster, weighing in at over 80 gigabytes. We used a Griffith Firewave to patch the Dolby 5.1 into the theaters sound board and did a couple quick checks for sound. While I wasn’t as happy with the sound as I could have been, I was told the PAC is missing a subwoofer. (Something imperative in my view of a lover of the thump.)

I ran down out of the projection room while the titles were flowing, and found my seat next to the crew. The next 78 minutes were pure heaven to me, as I looked for every bump, every pixel, every color that could possibly be out of sync with our vision. But there were so few! 

We gasped at the concept of God. We were taken aback at the materialist world view. We were enthralled by Dr. Goswami.

When it ended, many exclaimed “It’s over already??!” Now to a directors ear, to have a comment like that on a film on quantum physics and the nature of reality… it sounded sublime.
